This weekend, B-Boy showed us that he has mastered drinking from a straw.
We tried to get him to drink from a straw cup a month ago, but he just held the straw in his mouth- with no suction. He wasn't really sure what to do with it.
We had purchased two straw cups, which are plastic cups with screw tops that have a plastic bendy straw in the cup. The cool part about these cups is that they DON'T LEAK!!! My friend Cat at work suggested we get them for our trip to Florida in December, as her kids used them and did really well with them. Great concept, but the user had issues.
So we used a sippy cup instead, which works really well... until B-Boy turns it upside down. Then water comes shooting out of the sippy part. Or, as we discovered, when B-Boy shakes it, regardless whether it is facing up, down or sideways. Sippy cups have their limits.
It's not surprising that B-Boy had some trouble. B-Boy hadn't used a bottle in months, and that sucking motion is a bit different with a straw. AuntJ distinctly remembers showing Neb how to drink from a straw when he was young. I don't remember anything about it myself...
So how did I find out he could use a straw, you ask?
Today, B-Boy walked up to the end table his is not supposed to touch and grabbed Neb's water glass which contained a red bendy straw. Normally, B-Boy enjoys playing with straws, especially letting it hit against different surfaces to see the sounds it makes. But today was different. Today, B-Boy grabbed the straw and put it in his mouth. To do so, he had to tip the glass, which then poured water all down the front of him. That's when I arrived on the scene (All that happened very quickly!).
That was when I realized B-Boy is trying to drink from that straw!!!!
To test my theory, we went into the kitchen to get him his own cup of water. I put the straw in his cup, and he started to drink. The only way I knew he succeeded was that water was in his mouth. Then we had to show Neb.
B-Boy played with his cup and straw for a while, and then started (accidentally) pouring the water on the floor. This is when I remembered those nifty straw cups we had in the cabinet. A few moments later, B-Boy was happily drinking from the straw cup. And this is when I discovered, straw cups DON'T LEAK!!! B-Boy turned it upside down pretty quickly, and nothing came out.
HA! Destructo is foiled, for now!*
And B-Boy was nice enough to help us wipe up all the water from the floor. Good job B-Boy!
* Destructo is what we call B-Boy when he goes on a tear- destroying everything in his path... or at least, knocking it down. It's his super hero\villain name. All kids should have one, don't you think?

Bye-Bye
Today, I had to leave B-Boy again.
Cue the sad music and the frowny face... cuz Momma misses her little boy. But I'll be back home tomorrow, so it's not too bad.
I had to leave today to drive to South Carolina... I am presenting a paper at the University of South Carolina. One of the professors there is a friend of mine, so it should be a good trip.
B-Boy woke at 5am. He was WIDE awake with no hope of going back to sleep. Yuck. But the good news was that I got to spend some extra time with him this morning, even though I was tired.
I had left some items at work that I needed for my trip, so I decided to take him to daycare and let Neb off the hook for part of the day. We hit the road and got to the daycare before they would be able to take him, so I thought it would be fun to take him into my office while I got the stuff I forgot.
Which meant that some of my co-workers got to see B-Boy. At first, he was shy... clutching on to me tightly. But then he started to relax and warm up to the folks... finally smiling and waving Bye-Bye to two women (one of which had a baby 4 days after B-Boy was born).
I stopped by MissLovesECU's office. She is a recent graduate from ECU and was hired to work in another group... and she is an avid reader of this blog. (Hi MissLovesECU!) Another coworker was there and they got B-Boy warmed up by letting him play with their bobble head pens, which are pens with bobble heads attached that have goofy grins and wild hair. B-Boy was cautious with them at first, but then engaged them in bobble head fun.
As it was getting late, I picked B-Boy up to leave. He then started blowing kisses at MissLovesECU. Funny because he refused to do that for anyone else. Hmmm.... I guess he likes young women from ECU! (ChiggerButt is also at ECU.)
I said, "Tell them Bye-Bye" which normally results in a much delayed wave.
But not today. Today, B-Boy waved immediately. And then he said something for the first time. He said "Bye-Bye".
Awwww.... cue the cuteness!

Hmmmm... Donuts!
Yesterday, B-Boy got to eat a donut for the first time. And not just ANY donut, but a yummy, warm, North Carolina original- a Krispy Kreme donut!
We went to get a dozen donuts for his teachers. Not wanting to leave his old room out, we also picked up a half dozen for them. And, since we were there, and all those wonderful sugar soaked goodies were just sitting there so lonely, we got a half a dozen for us too.
While I waited for the order, Neb took B-Boy over to the giant viewing window... where you get to watch the donuts get made! B-Boy loved every minute of it, and had the biggest grin on his face- from ear to ear. He smiled so much that we thought it might stick on his face like that forever.
There was a woman (aka DonutLady) keeping watch on the donuts as they came off the cooking line and headed for the sugar shower. B-Boy kept flirting with her, and she kept waving at him.
We decided to eat our donuts there since we were so early. B-Boy sat so he could still look at the window. He wasn't sure about the donut at first...
But then the sugar hit, and B-Boy was HAVING FUN! YAY! SUGAR!
He then bounced up and down in complete happiness. He even wore his nifty Krispy Kreme hat for a few minutes... which he also wore when we delivered the donuts to his teachers. Too cute!
When we were getting ready to leave, B-Boy started waving bye-bye to DonutLady. It was really sweet, since B-Boy normally doesn't wave to strangers unless we show him to. Then he started blowing kisses to DonutLady through the glass.
Yep, he really liked those donuts!

An Enthusiastic Response
Words are not going to convey this correctly, but we unfortunately did not know a funny moment was going to happen, and thus did not have the video camera running. But I will do my best.
For the last week or so, B-Boy has turned into a picky eater.
He used to love food, of all kinds. Then he started refusing beef. He always ate veggies and fruit with gusto. The only veggies he refused were spinach and asparagus. Spinach he ate until he started chewing, and then it was a lost cause.
But a week or so ago, B-Boy started to wave off food. He would taste a bite, and then dump his plate. After playing in the pile, he would then start FLINGING his food. Needless to say, we would going running to try to stop the flying food. When he is older and wonders why his chore is to sweep the floor, you all will know!
It started with certain other foods, like fish (which he used to love) and then it went to peas, and ham and green beans. And B-Boy LOVED green beans. Then it didn't matter what it was... he stopped eating it. The exception to this new rule was applesauce. B-Boy will polish off applesauce no matter what.
At first we thought he was being a picky eater. Then we thought he was exerting independence. Then we thought, he must have a bug, making food unappetizing or causing him to have little appetite. His dirty diapers have been really yucky lately... let's just call them runny and leave it at that. We have changed his milk back to formula, tried adding probiotics, all to no avail.
We now think it is probably a combination of all those things. We shall see.
But that isn't what I wanted to tell you about. I only mention it because today we were having another difficult meal. He finally did eat the tofu, and a bit of the dirty rice... a few sweet potatoes. Anything to try to get him on more solid ground, so to speak.
B-Boy started to cry and grunt, and then gave the All-done lean of his head. He then flopped a bit, flailing his arms about until they hung limp as he leaned to his left. He was not happy to be in the high chair, and was letting us know it. I decided to ask him - "B-Boy, do you want some applesauce?" I have to admit, I did not think he would respond, as I did not think he knew the word applesauce.
His response was classic, and made both Neb and I laugh.
He quickly sat straight up. His face lit up- his eyes were open wide and happiness showed all over his face. He elevated his arms with his palms down and elbows bent (like in an L-shape).
He then said in a loud and happy voice "Yeah - Yeah!"
Cue the laughter. He then ate a lot of applesauce, having a great time doing it. Which was fine, because that was where I put the probiotics. Heh heh.
And on a side note:
Not only are we now sure he knows the word "Applesauce", he also does understand what "Yeah" means- and responds accordingly. There is no doubt.

Steppin' down with B-Boy
Earlier this week, I wrote about how B-Boy had mastered climbing the stairs. We let him crawl up the stairs every night before bed... it's a good transition for him and it lets him get the last bit of energy out before bed.
He has going up mastered.
Yesterday, he showed us that even though we haven't let him practice it, he has going down mastered too!
It happened just after he woke up yesterday morning. I was downstairs making pancakes, and Neb was upstairs getting B-Boy dressed. He put B-Boy down and both of them walked down the hall toward the stairs. Usually, B-Boy will stand at the top and wait for us to pick him up.
Not yesterday. He sat down, turned around, and started to crawl down the stairs. Neb was curious to see how he would do, so he moved around him and kept watch right ahead of him on the stairs. After B-Boy made it half way down, Neb called me over to see the new trick.
He made really good time down the stairs, which has both Neb and I worried! We now have to install the baby gate at the top of the stairs. It was the last one we had to do, and since we haven't let him near the stairs, we waited.
It doesn't look like we can wait any longer. B-Boy now knows he can get down. That coupled with a strong will is definitely trouble!

Putting things away
I have to say that I love Montessori based teaching. I was a Montessori kid, and B-Boy's daycare is one too.
Today, we had a new milestone, and it was completely courtesy of his Montessori school.
I was emptying the dishwasher, which is a sure fire way to get B-Boy to come over. I don't know why it is such an attraction, and when knives are present, it sure is a scary place. B-Boy likes to put things in it, and also take things out. I don't mind him taking out the clean dishes, but if they are dirty, chances are he will be wearing whatever is on the item. Not fun.
So I usually close it when he starts to approach. He will help the final closing process, which then lets him move on to another task.
But today, there was nothing dangerous for him to touch... and since they were clean I thought I would let him amuse himself with it while I finished putting items away. I looked down and B-Boy had found a lid to a pot that he usually gets to play with- he started taking it out. He held on to it for a few moments and then he did something new and unexpected...
He walked over to the cabinet where the pots and lids are kept, opened it very carefully, and then he PUT THE LID AWAY.
I was shocked. I didn't realize that he had made that connection- the pots and pans belong in this cabinet. Nor had I realized that he understood that I was putting things away where they belong.
He spent a few more minutes taking the lid out, and then putting it back in. Then he had a rousing good time playing with the pots and a B-Boy sized wooden spoon.
It was such a neat moment, one I want to remember. I hope you forgive me jotting it down here, as it probably is not very exciting for the rest of you!

A visit with MusicLady
MusicLady visits B-Boy's room on Tuesday mornings. B-Boy loves music, and really enjoys her visits to the room. We are so lucky to have her.
This week, I was able to go to his room to participate in Music Time. It was good to see MusicLady again! She is so creative, and has such cute songs for the kids. When I arrived, B-Boy was sitting on the floor with the rest of the kids, in a semi-circle around MusicLady. He looked up to see who was making noise at the door, and it was adorable to watch the recognition spread over his face.
He stood up and walked over to me with the biggest smile on his face! It was then that I realized that two other parents were there too! We joined them on the other side of the room, B-Boy sat in my lap immediately and started swaying to the music.
MusicLady sang a story about snow, showing a picture book and playing a Xylophone too. She then sprinkled snowflakes in the air for the kids to catch. (The snowflakes were paper cutout snowflakes that she had laminated to keep up with the children.) B-Boy took some coaxing to pick his up, and then spent a few minutes trying to hand it to me. MusicLady called him over and eventually got him to give his snowflake to her.
Did you notice B-Boy wore his drum shirt for MusicLady? She did!
MusicLady then sang a song about snowmen. She brought out a felt board and attached 5 snow people to it. We then sang about the 5 little snowmen with tall hats and big red bows. Then the sun would come out (and she would put the sun above one of the snow people) and then the snowman would go bye-bye as it "melted" off the board.
B-Boy was quite curious, and sat near her to get a good look. But then it wasn't quite close enough, so he crawled closer, and even helped MusicLady pick the next snowman for melting!
During one song, each child got to sit with MusicLady and play the Xylophone. B-Boy really liked banging the mallets, and I could not resist snapping this photo for you.
The last thing MusicLady did before she left was to show the kids her special snowman music box. It was a miniature ice rink that had a spinning piece on it. MusicLady told the kids to watch, and placed a snowman figure wearing ice skates on top. The snowman spun around while the music played, going faster and slower, spinning around the rink. The kids lay on their stomachs watching the amazing figure. B-Boy could not resist reaching out to touch it, and MusicLady was so sweet to show him the snowman was to be watched, not touched. He didn't try to grab it again.
(Can MusicLady come to my house and do that? Wait, I am getting off topic here...)
MusicLady then sang us out with her bright pink guitar. Yay MusicLady! Thanks for letting us have a fun together moment. MusicLady Rocks!

Mommy? Daddy? I am trying to tell you something!
B-Boy doesn't say much, but he is doing a lot of communicating.
B-Boy will put things in your hand that he wants, like a cup for water, or his yogurt melt snacks. The story of the cup is a funny one... One day, B-Boy picked his cup up off of the kitchen table, grabbed my hand, turned my hand over and put the cup in it. He then (still holding on to my hand) walked over to the water cooler. Although he didn't use words, I clearly heard him- "Come on Mom, I am thirsty!"
And that's not all.
When he is ready for bed, he will walk up to the baby gate in the kitchen that leads into the hallway. He then will look at us as he grabs on to the gate. It's his way of saying "I am ready, let's go to bed!". If we don't get it, or respond fast enough, then he will start to shake the gate and say "AHHHHH!" as if to say "Come on people... what don't you get? I am READY FOR BED!"
He has done it for over a week now, and since it has been consistent, Neb and I are finally catching on. B-Boy talks without words!
Once we get to the gate and open it, he will walk through and head for the stairs. He will stop for a quick look out the front window and I will start up the stairs to encourage him to follow. Neb will stand behind him and he then crawls up the stairs. Neb is there to keep him from falling and to prod him upward. I stand at the top cheering him on.... and then run up and down the hall (stopping periodically to get his room ready for his bedtime). When he gets to the top, he stands up so proud and walks down the hall to his room to chase me.
I crouch in his room near his bed and shade my eyes with my hands. He then does the funniest thing. He doesn't walk over and touch me... He will get down on all fours, crawl over to me and look up into my eyes. A giggle usually follows... It's so cute! He is so proud of himself and will then start to play with his toys in his room.
Usually.
But last night was different. B-Boy usually gets a bath every other night. He normally doesn't get one every night because it really dries out his skin. He had been fussy most of the day and evening, mostly because of the shots he got at his doctor's appointment earlier in the week. Neb and I had talked about skipping the bath and letting him go directly to bed. We thought it might be a good idea to let him go straight to bed since he had been so fussy, clearly not himself.
When we got to the top of the stairs last night, B-Boy chased me into his room. He then followed his Dad into the bathroom, where Neb was getting the humidifier filled up. B-Boy walked to the tub, picked up his toddler tub and started banging it. Yep, you guessed it. B-Boy wanted a bath. So he got one, and he was quite happy.
So that's the update on communication at our house. We are hearing B-Boy loud and clear- we think!

I just had to share some of these photos with you. B-Boy is sporting an outfit from his AuntSly, who sent us home from Florida with lots of clothes her sons wore that no longer fit. His cute little sweater and blue jeans make him look like a little man - too cute! Where did he wear these cute clothes, you ask?
B-Boy, Neb and I went to the grocery store. B-Boy had a lot of extra energy, and so we thought he might want to push his own cart to get it out. The store has small carts for kids to use (with cute flags on a pole that read "Shopper in Training"), and handy wipes to keep them clean. B-Boy is walking quite well, so we thought he would enjoy pushing the cart around.
He did, at first. Then he figured out that he could run around untethered and explore. At that point, we had to put him back in the big cart, which he definitely did not appreciate!

Hey!
Something new that B-Boy says a lot now... HEY!
He does it mostly when he sees us for the first time... like when we walk into his room in the morning or when Neb is downstairs feeding him and I turn the corner and come into view.
HEY!
It is usually coupled with a big ol' smile. He is just so proud of himself.
He also says YEAH-YEAH quite a bit. It doesn't necessarily mean Yes yet, but we are making progress.
B-Boy also understands a lot more vocabulary, even if he can't say it. He knows where to go when we ask
"Do you want Water?" Straight to the water cooler he goes!
Do you want APPLE SAUCE? "YEAH-YEAH" he says, and squeals with delight. He knows the word applesauce, let me tell you.
Do you want up? His arms go straight in the air, in preparation of being elevated.
Where's the Kitty? He starts looking for the cats...
Where's Daddy? He starts looking for Neb.
He is understanding more and more. We are all having fun on this journey!

15 Months
B-Boy went back to the doctor for his 15 Month check-up.
The nurses were quite surprised to see how big he had gotten! They poked and prodded, and took lots of measurements.
His length? 34 and a half inches long!
His weight? 27 pounds, 3 ounces
I told the nurse that last measurement MUST be wrong, I lift him everyday, and he is at least 35 pounds! Ha ha!
One of the things they do with the data is graph it to see how he is doing compared to other kids. His weight is good, and has actually started to slow down since his is now walking. Totally normal.
His height is another matter. Baby boy is completely off the chart. The curve for the top percentile of kids is so far below his height.. it was really funny to see his data point floating so far above the curve. I will have to graph it for you so you can see what I mean.
It is funny to think that he is almost 3 feet tall- at 15 MONTHS!!! He is looking more and more like a toddler, and I don't think it will be long before he will look old enough to drive!
