Other One

B-Boy surprised me with a new concept he has mastered.

I was asking him to show me different parts of his body. "B-Boy, where is your nose? Where is your chin? Where is your ear?" He promptly showed me where they were.

I then asked him "B-Boy, where is your hand?". He showed me his left hand. I then asked him "B-Boy, where is your OTHER hand? Can you show me your other hand?"

And you know what? He took a second, and then showed me his right hand. I was shocked.

So we continued playing the new game "Show me your OTHER" where he pointed out his feet, eyes, and ears one at a time. I was so surprised, and Neb was too when we showed him our new game.

Neither one of us knew he understood that!

Happy Father's Day!

Neb and B-Boy had some great fun for Father's Day.

B-Boy's teachers had a party in the class for all the kids and their dads. Neb went over for the fun, and reported B-Boy was ready to leave as soon as he saw him walk through the door. Yep, just like him to give Neb what he wanted for Father's Day! :)

But Neb stayed, and the teachers served them root beer! (Neb reported that B-Boy wasn't a fan of the root beer, but he enjoyed it!) Those teachers are so creative!

They also had the cutest gifts for the children to give their dads... I must admit I was tempted to "permanetly borrow" them! The teachers selected a photo taken at the parent's picnic of each child. (They picked the one of B-Boy in the fire truck tent, so cute!) They had the kids paint tongue depressors bright colors and glued them to make them a frame that resembled the # symbol. The photo was glued in the center. B-Boy's was a bright blue-green color.

But that's not all! Neb also got a small canvas with B-Boy's handprint in green, sitting on a tiny wood easle. It was absolutley adorable, and Neb loved it.

Meanwhile, back at home, Neb woke to a pancake breakfast, and a big poster on the inside of the front door.

Neb is a hard one to shop for, but I think B-Boy and I did pretty good. Neb's favorite musician, Jackie Greene, had just published a book of his songs for the last 10 years. The book included pictures, lyrics and some stories behind the song. Fun!

All in all, we had a great day! So Happy Father's Day Neb, B-Boy really does have the best daddy ever.

B-Boy goes to the Beach

B-Boy got to go on a full fledged, fun filled vacation! We decided he had waited long enough, and booked a house down near Pawley's Island in South Carolina, just south of Myrtle Beach.

GranE arrived the night before we left, and B-Boy was really excited to see her the next morning! GranE was surprised to see that he remembered her right away!

We decided to take two cars down, since we had a lot to take- Neb and I were planning on taking advantage of the babysitting services of GranE so that we could go play golf. The clubs took up a lot of space, so we decided to go ahead and take both cars. B-Boy never did sleep- we have the only kid that doesn't sleep in the car!

Once we arrived, B-Boy thought it was fun to RUN AROUND the house we rented. He loved the screened porch, and we all liked sitting out on the deck to enjoy the view of the golf course. The community we were in was part of a larger resort with beach access just down the road, a golf course, and a community pool walking distance from the house we rented.

I have to say, B-Boy's favorite part of the trip was the pool. It was the PERFECT temperature, and it was not very crowded. There were just enough folks around for him to get in some fun people watching, but not too many as to overwhelm him. He liked the fact that the pool had really wide steps- and spent a lot of time crawling back and forth on them.

The beach, well, that was not his favorite. He more like tolerated it. We went every morning after we finished breakfast... which means that we hit the beach around 10:30am. B-Boy seemed excited the first day we got there, staring at the ocean from the steps in awe and curiosity.

Let's Go! Let's Go!
Let's Go to the Beach!

See B-Boy, the ocean!

Yay!

B-Boy enjoyed playing in the sand with all the sand toys we brought, but enjoyed snack time the most.

This is much bigger than our sandbox at daycare!

The beach makes me hungry.
Mmmm, Cereal!

At first, B-Boy did not like the ocean. Neb and I carried him into the water to our hips so that his feet would be submerged, but he would know he was safe. As the waves would pass around us, we would rise and fall with the water making happy sounds to let B-Boy know it was fun.

It took the entire week, but eventually, B-Boy thought is was *somewhat* fun. But he did eventuallly walk into the water himself, allowing the waves to spread around his feet. As it did, he would say "YAY!" and then "Ga Done!"

Family time is fun Daddy!

B-Boy also enjoyed making sand castles with Neb, but I am not sure what he enjoyed more... destroying the structures that Neb built, or going with Neb to fetch water to make the castles. Although you know he just had to be the big boy and carry his own water!

Daddy, I can do it!!!

Ok, I know, I have peppered this post with lots of pictures, so I will share a funny story with you before finishing with what I think is my absolute favorite picture of the entire trip.

One day, we were at the beach, and had decided that B-Boy had probably had enough fun. While we started to put all the toys, chairs, and tents away... B-Boy decided he WAS DONE. He started to walk back toward the wood steps to head to the car. (Keep in mind we were pretty close, but with bare feet on hot sand, we weren't close enough for B-Boy to get all the way there without help.)

B-Boy took a few steps, cocked his head to the side, and with his back to us said "Ga Done!". He then took a few more steps, raised his arm up and waved as he said "Bye-Bye!". He did this several times in a row... all the while Neb and I are doubled over in laughter. "Yes, B-Boy, we get it, you are ready to go."

Before the week was over, I was able to snap a photo that is probably my favorite of the entire trip.

I love you GranE.
I love you too B-Boy!

B-Boy can climb!

As you may recall, B-Boy loves going to the park. I am not sure what he enjoys more- the big, swirly slide, the swings, or watching all the other people. B-Boy really likes people watching, especially when there are bigger kids than he doing big kid things. He then wants to try to do whatever he sees them do.

Case in point: climbing up a ladder like structure to get to the top of the swirly slide.

B-Boy used to climb the stairs to get to the top (with a slight lift from Mom to get him up to the very top). But one day, he watched a boy older than he climb up the blue ladder like structure, and he just had to try it.

At first, he could only do the first step. Neb helped him navigate to a second step, but for several visits, that was as far as he got. Then one day, he got it and started climbing up and up. Neb would tap the bar where B-Boy should put his foot and B-Boy would move his foot there once he got his confidence. Neb hardly has to help at all now, and B-Boy gets up the blue structure pretty quickly. The big assist from us happens at the very top, where there is a big boy step to get from the ladder to the platform of the slide.

I snapped a few photos so you could see!

Of course, I thought you would like to see the whole structure for context... can you believe he gets to the top? It's surprisingly steep!

The Parent Picnic at Daycare

B-Boy's teachers hosted a Parent's Picnic for the class, and I was really looking forward to it. Neb had to go to Indianapolis for work so I got to have all the fun!

The teachers provided entertainment and food for the kids, and parent's were asked to bring their own lunches. After we finished eating (and by eating, I mean after B-Boy's applesauce ran out and we needed to distract him),  B-Boy and I went to play with the other kids.

His teachers brought a fire truck tent for the kids to play in, and B-Boy thought it was really fun. Although he was the only kid taller than the tent and his head poked the top up, B-Boy thought it was great fun to pose for one of the teachers who was taking pictures of the kids.

Cheese!

B-Boy also enjoyed playing with his head teacher, who was so sweet to provide bubbles and assistance!

This pokey thingy goes in the
bubble liquid, and then what?

They taste yummy!

Time to reload...

We had a great time, and we were so grateful that they put the fun picnic together for us.

Thank you teachers, this is FUN!!!

ChiggerButt comes to B-Boy

Last night, BB King performed at the Durham Performing Arts Center. Neb got us tickets, and a good friend was to join us.

The concert started at 8pm, which meant that B-Boy would need a babysitter! ChiggerButt is home from college for the summer, and she was available to come play with B-Boy for the night. We had asked if she would be willing to come to us because we wanted her to put him to sleep at our house rather than at hers.

It was the first time someone has watched him in our home who was not one of his grandmothers. It was really easy to leave him knowing he was so well cared for- ChiggerButt is amazing!

But I am getting ahead of myself. ChiggerButt agreed to meet us at our house and she was there when we arrived home. B-Boy was in good spirits, but suddenly got very shy when he saw her. Once in the house, he appeared quite anxious... he found his straw cup of water, ran to the corner he finds his "safe corner" by the door, and started drinking while he pondered ChiggerButt's arrival.

And just like that- CLICK! The light went off and he realized - "Oh! I know who you are! You are CHIGGERBUTT! I love ChiggerButt!!!! And you are here for MEEEEEEEEE!"

And then he ran to her, handed her his straw cup- and then proceeded to show her all his toys.YAY!

I gave her a tour downstairs, showed her what to feed him, and then we proceeded upstairs. B-Boy was so excited to show ChiggerButt his room, and all the toys upstairs. I talked to her about his nighttime routine, and warned her that B-Boy will keep asking for her to read books if she didn't stop him and put him to bed.

I showed her how to work the TV in the Bonus Room, and B-Boy (who does not get to go in there very often) could not wait to show her how good he is at playing his Daddy's electric guitar. That shiny red and white guitar is just too much for him to resist.

We headed back downstairs, and I asked B-Boy to show her a ball. He ran over, picked one up and then put it in his basketball hoop. I said "Bye-Bye" and started toward the door- which is when he started to make a crying noise. I gave him a quick kiss, and ChiggerButt distracted him with another ball. At that point, I was easy to ignore- he had to show off for ChiggerButt.

And so, I made it out the door with no crying, screaming or guilty feelings. So worth any price, just don't tell ChiggerButt!

I met Neb at his work, and we headed to Durham to meet our friend for dinner. There is a great new restaurant called the Bull City Burger and Brewery (BCBB) which serves pasture raised beef raised in North Carolina- most items are made in-house (like the sauerkraut, pickles, mustard and beer), and they get their produce from local farmers. The burgers were great, and we really enjoyed ourselves.

The concert was fun, but not his best showing that we attended... but the man is 85- and goodness knows I hope I will be as clear as he is at that age.

When we got home, ChiggerButt updated us on her night. Apparently, B-Boy fooled her- she said he was SO EASY to babysit! HA!

She told us that he did give her a moment of uncertainty when he asked for cereal. I had told her he likes to snack on one of 3 cereals- Cheerios(which he calls O's), Chex, and Product 19 (which he calls Cereal). Sometimes when he says he wants cereal, he can mean any of the three- and you just have to offer one after another until you get the right one. He will SCREAM until you get it right. He was much kinder to her, and she said he looked at her like she was crazy when she got it wrong. But eventually he got what he wanted... her saltine flavored goldfish that she brought with him to snack on. She was really sweet to share them with him.

She also told us how she was able to trick him to get him to eat, that she ran him around like crazy until he was ready for bed... and then he REALLY wanted a bath so she gave it to him. She told us how she had to chase him around his room to get him dressed and was eventually able to do so. She read to him until he looked at her and said "Bye-Bye" while he leaned toward the crib.

She put him to bed and he went right to sleep.

After she left I went upstairs to turn off the TV and lights in the bonus room. As I walked past B-Boy's room, I had a big surprise. B-Boy's door was wide open! The hall light was on, his door was open, and he was out cold.

Yep, ChiggerButt worked magic. I am still not quite sure what she did, but we will definitely have her back to do it again!
