Bye-Bye Paci!

Thanks to ChiggerButt, I have some really good news! I am sorry it has taken so long to write this for you, but we had some significant delay in getting our internet installed.

Wow, there is so much to tell you, I better back up. As I mentioned previously, we bought a new house. B-Boy did really well with the move and change, better than any of us expected. He really likes the new house, and has a lot of fun running down the hall to his play room.

The play room is amazingly large, and has lots of fun nooks and crannies for B-Boy to play in. In addition, his bedroom is much bigger than his old one, with much higher ceilings!

Before the move, Neb and I discussed when might be a good time to remove B-Boy's paci completely. You might recall I had posted earlier that we had gotten B-Boy down to only one pacifier in his crib. Neb and I were watching closely, and thought it was time to remove the pacifier entirely.

And then we bought the new house... and B-Boy was going to be sleeping in a new space. That didn't seem the right time to remove his coping mechanism. So, we let it remain as we moved into the new space.

And then on Sunday, Neb and I had tickets to go see Huey Lewis and the News. We were really looking forward to getting our 80's fix on, and since the concert was Sunday evening, we needed someone to watch B-Boy.

Enter ChiggerButt.

Man, we are so lucky to have ChiggerButt. She claims that B-Boy is so easy, but what she doesn't know is that he is only that way for her! :)

ChiggerButt watched B-Boy when we moved into the new home, and was so great to come back  We were really excited to know he was in her hands, especially since he was still napping when she arrived and we had to leave.

When we got home from the concert, I noticed that B-Boy's single pacifier was on the kitchen island.

Yes, ChiggerButt managed to put B-Boy to sleep without it!

When I asked her about it, she said she realized when she was rocking him to put him to sleep that she forgot it downstairs... and he went to sleep without it.

Last night, he went to sleep without the pacifier... and it happened again tonight.

So ChiggerButt is owed a big thank you, and is so very appreciated.

Whoo-hoo, B-Boy has moved on from his paci! (We hope!)

11 Months

Today, B-Boy is 11 months old. Wow. In just one month, we will be able to turn his car seat around, and a whole new world will open up for us in the car. It's hard to believe that this time last year, I was stressing about his soon-to-be arrival. The year has flown by very quickly.

We started the day by sleeping in. Ahhhhh, wonderful sleep. B-Boy seems to sense that it is a holiday weekend (it is Labor Day, after all)... so he was nice enough to sleep very late. Once he woke, he got his bottle and then we headed downstairs for breakfast. He ate 3 ounces of oatmeal and half a bananna while I made pancakes.

Which reminds me, in my last post, I forgot to mention that B-Boy LOVE LOVE LOVES pancakes. He gets a small amount of butter on top (no syrup), and it gets cuts into squares he can pick up himself. You want to see pure bliss? Watch B-Boy eat one of his Mama's pancakes... a hint of vanilla and cinnamon make them quite yummy.

After breakfast, we played for a while and then went to the pool. It was a bit chilly in the water (the high today was supposed to be 85 degrees, perfect for outdoor activities, but it made the pool a bit cold). But we still had a blast. B-Boy really likes being in the water.

When we got home, B-Boy ate several ounces of eggplant and hamburger. He was quite the mess when he was done, which was actually ok because he went directly to the bathtub. Oh what fun he had with his toys in the tub today!

He then took the longest nap... it lasted about three hours. That is why you were able to get that last post about what he is eating now! When he woke, he ate some mangos and drank his formula from a cup. We then packed him up for a field trip. I found a park in our town that looked pretty nifty, so we decided to take him and see what we could do there.

We pushed him around the walking trail, until we found a nice fluffy patch of grass in the shade. We spread a blanket out and B-Boy played with his trucks on it while we got comfy. It was funny to watch B-Boy crawl around the blanket, as he treated the edge like a fence he should not cross... until he eventually did. He especially enjoyed crawling on his Daddy, and trying to take the camera out of my hand. It was interesting to watch him touch the grass and process what that felt like - it was his first time actually playing in the grass!

Wheeeee.... This is fun Daddy!

Neb got up and let B-Boy walk in the grass for a while. He would hold B-Boy's hands up in the air, and B-Boy would take his steps one after another. He is doing most of the work now, Neb is just there mostly for balance... and cheering.

Look Mommy, I'm a monster! Grrrrr.....

There was a playground area for kids 6 and under at the park. We spent some time there, and B-Boy and I went down the small slide together a few times. B-Boy is still unsure if it was fun or not. He was all smiles at the bottom, but the middle was a bit touch and go.

Wheeeeeee?

After the slide, we walked around the park on the walking trail. It was such a beautiful day, with a slight breeze. We ended the walk at the baby swings, and we could not resist letting B-Boy swing for a while. He really liked that swing... I think it reminded him of his bouncer that he no longer fits in.
I was able to get some cute pictures of him. I do hope you enjoy them.

We took another long walk once we got home, so we are pretty sure B-Boy got his fair share of fresh air today. He is sleeping now, and I am happy to tell you that he fell asleep very quickly after his bottle.

So, we did a lot today as a family to celebrate his 11 months on this earth. We hope the day was as fun for you as it was for us, and that you all have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

Go have some fun! Ha Ha!

Meeting with the teacher

This week, Neb and I met with B-Boy's head teacher.

It was his "10 month" meeting, where we learned more about the transitions that are coming for him... as he prepares to move up to the classroom for one year olds. He is bcoming more of a toddler everyday, and we got to learn how to best be consistent between what happens at home and what they do at day care.

We also talked more about his eating solids and moving up to the Toddler Food Program. This means that the day care will supply the food for lunch, which comes from my company's cafe. I am looking forward to it, as B-Boy really wants to eat what all the other kids in the room are eating. He is really big on doing what the older kids do.

His teacher said he is the best kid in the room with a cup. No sippy cup for this boy. He drinks from a big boy cup (well, a little big boy!) and he does it really well. She mentioned we should start transitioning him off of the bottle to strictly cup... at our discretion. She suggested that we consider just using the cup at day care and use a bottle at home until we were comfortable stopping the bottle.

I am going to miss the bottle. Why? Because I am able to go over and feed him a bottle during the day. He is so snuggly and sweet when I go, and it is nice to feel so close to him. I know that it won't be long before he is grown and asking for the car keys. So trasitioning off of the bottle, although a natural part of him getting older, is a sort of bittersweet milestone for me.

But, this is not about me... and his teacher said I could still come over to play with him. That made me feel better. I love playing with B-Boy at daycare.

At eleven months old, B-Boy will go more on a set schedule than he is now, and his bed will turn around. His bed has 3 sides, and the fourth side is open. The open edge is currently against the wall, but in a few weeks, B-Boy will be able to get in and out of his bed as he wishes. This is mostly because the beds in the 1 year olds room don't have any sides. So having one side open helps him with the transition.

We also discussed where B-Boy is developmentally. We all seemed to be on the same page with that. He is doing REALLY well with mobility and object permanence (the understanding that objects continue to exist even if you can't see them). B-Boy is a bulldog when you hide something (like the remote control)... he knows it is there, and will go after it to no end.

He is still not communicating with us with words, but considering the boy is almost 3 feet tall... I'll cut him some slack. A friend told me that when one area grows (like mobility, size, vocabulary) other areas tend to slow down. Makes sense to me... at least where B-Boy is concerned.

One thing that came up several times is that he is... stubborn and strong-willed.

Funny, since those are the words we used when we brought B-Boy in for the first time. Nice to see some things don't change. We are all in trouble as he enters toddlerhood! But, we will endevour to be consistent with what daycare does.

We all agree that it is time for B-Boy to learn the word no. I asked if Neb could learn it too. Ha ha.

His teacher told us they give him three chances (kind of like Little Bunny Foo-Foo, but without the GOON part). After the third time being told no, they will move him to a contained area to get him away from what he did. Neb and I both looked at each other and asked "Do we have to wait until the third time?" Some days, our patience just won't last that long.

All in all, it was a good meeting. Before we know it, we will be meeting again to discuss moving into a new classroom. How is it that he is almost a year old?

10 Months!

Today, B-Boy is ten months old! How that is possible is beyond me.

I am teaching this week, and so I did not get to spend much time with him today. Neb took him to daycare and picked him up. So I can't tell you too much about his day, but when I got home, we got to play together while Neb mowed the yard.

He was in a great mood, and we got to crawl all over the living room. He found his toy basket and proceeded to pull all of the toys out. Putting them back just did not seem quite so much fun.

B-Boy is pulling up like crazy. He is even feeling so confident to hold himself up with one hand. It won't be long before he starts walking, I am sure, but for now we are enjoying the crawling stage. B-Boy is so happy to be able to GO GO GO. He is loving the new found freedom.

I'm 10 months old today!

I have FIVE teeth! Two on the bottom and three on top!!!

ARGH!!!!! Let me out Daddy!

9 Month Appointment

This week, B-Boy went to his 9 month appointment at the doctor.

The good news is that this did not involve any shots. Whoo-hoo!

B-Boy got weighed and measured.  If you recall, when he was born he was 8 pounds 11 ounces and 21 and a half inches long.

Well, B-Boy is now 24 pounds and 3 ounces!!! Not only that, but he is 31 and a half inches long. He is off the charts for percentiles.

It's hard to believe that he has grown a full 10 inches since his birth and is now a little over 2 and a half feet tall. Crazy.

My friend Cat told me a few months ago that after he hit 20 pounds it would take him a while to put on more weight. I think B-Boy has proved that theory incorrect... however, perhaps for him we should benchmark 30 pounds instead of 20? ;)

Happy 4th of July, and a Happy 9 months!

It's really hard to believe that B-Boy is nine months old today... but he is.

In celebration, our country threw a big party... for its own birthday!

We went to the pool and had a big ol' sack of fun. It was a bit chilly in the water because the temperature dropped to the mid eighties this week, so the ground didn't soak up much warmth. But we made the best of it, and had a good time all the same.

I could not resist another holiday to get B-Boy into costume... and we hope you enjoy the result. We hear that UNCLE SAM is a bit busy these days, and so Uncle B-Boy has come to help. Enjoy your day!

I am SOOO ready for this photo shoot to be over!

Seventh Month... Your baby should be able to...

So I was reading over the "What to Expect The First Year" book for the seventh month. The chapter starts with a list of what your baby should be able to do, what your baby probably can do, what your baby might be able to do, and what else is possible for the month.

I wanted to document this for where B-Boy is currently. The list below has check marks where he has completed that milestone. I'll revist the list later this month to see how he is doing.

By the end of the month, your baby

Should be able to:
þ  Sit without support

þ  Feed self a cracker

þ  Razz(make a wet razzing sound)

Will probably be able to:
þ  Bear some weight on legs when held upright

¨  Object if you try to take a toy away

þ  Work to get a toy out of reach

þ  Pass a cube or other object from one hand to another

þ  Look for dropped object

þ  Rake a raisin and pick it up in fist

þ  Turn in the direction of a voice

þ  Babble, combining vowels and consonants such as ga-ga-ga-ga, ba-ba-ba-ba, ma-ma-ma-ma, da-da-da-da

May possibly be able to:
¨  Stand holding on to someone or something

May even be able to:
¨  Pull up to standing position from sitting

¨  Get into a sitting position from stomach

¨  Play patty cake or wave bye-bye

¨  Pick up tiny object with any part of thumb and finger

¨  Walk holding on to furniture

¨  Say mama or dada indiscriminately

1/2

Yep. B-Boy is one half today... that's six months for you non-math geeks.

To celebrate, I made him a T-Shirt. When is he ever going to be exactly one half again? Never! So he gets a shirt. Funny thing is, it's an 12 month old sized t-shirt, which actually, should probably have been 18 months sized. He is consistently wearing 18 month old sized clothes now... AT 6 MONTHS!!! Yikes. It's not that he is fat, he is just so long!!! Long torso, long arms, and long legs. B-Boy is definately his dad.

Would someone please make my mom STOP using the sewing machine?

One new thing B-Boy did today... I hung up his jumper swing. My friend, WorkBFF, told me her kids LOVED it. I bought one used, scrubbed it, and sanitized it before hanging it up. B-Boy had a ball jumping up and down. The video is a bit long... but I could not resist sharing it with you.

Happy 5 Months B-Boy!

Wow. It's hard to believe that five months ago, B-Boy came into this world to meet us all.

He is just so big, ya'll. Seriously, next time you see him in person, you will be amazed. On Monday, my mom got in the backseat of our car with him (after not seeing him for two weeks). The first words out of her mouth were "Who is this two year old in the backseat?" Yep, he is that big.

I can sit on the floor and hold him. His feet will be on the floor, and his head is well over my shoulder. Don't think so? Check out the photos we took today...

Yay! We are home!

I am so big!

Dad, thanks for the bling!

You might notice that B-Boy is sporting a bib that Neb bought him. It's got Run DMC's gold chains on it. HA!

I am a happy baby today!!!

So what did he do today? He woke early and we went to work. I dropped him off at the daycare and he had some time with MusicLady and her bright pink guitar!!! Later, I went back to feed him and he was in good spirits, although he was quite wiggly! That boy loves to wiggle around especially during diaper changes!

I picked him up after work, went to get Neb, and off we went home. Neb played in the activity gym with him, I held him for a while, and then Neb fed him. We rocked for a while and then went upstairs for B-Boy to get a bath. He really enjoyed the bath, splashing the water quite a bit. After we dried him off, we headed to his room for a nice massage. B-Boy likes the rub... he started to fuss a bit, so we skipped the story and swaddled him for bed. The seahorse, Neb and I then seranaded him to sleep, which he did quickly.

What a day. Happy 5 months B-Boy.

Dr. Roll Foot Massage

Much to update you on today's adventures.

Today, B-Boy went for his four month check up. That meant S-H-O-T-S... :(

He got weighed, measured, poked and prodded today. I know you are curious, so I am dashing off this quick update... my appologies if it is not very entertaining today.

Before I get to the numbers, while we were waiting for the doctor today, B-Boy found his feet! We had stripped him down to his diaper and he was laying on the examining table/bench thingie... he lifted his legs up in the air. Next thing I know, he is grabbing his feet!!! He then continued to hold them and pull him toward his face. Too cute!

The doctor came in and said B-Boy was right on track for most of the developemental milestones and ahead on the rest. YAY! They measured him and both the nurses were SHOCKED at how long his was... 26.5 inches. His head? 17.25 inches. His weight? We learned from the pediatrician that his weight should double his birthweight at six months of age. Guess what? Drum roll please! He weighs 17 pounds 8 ounces! Which means he has doubled his weight in four months!!!! Yikes! He is in the 90th percentile for weight and height. Wow.

Holy moly, B-Boy is growing up! And fast... but he sure feels heavier... and that was BEFORE he ate his bottle!

B-Boy also got 3 of his 6 immunizations... one liquid to drink, and two shots. We will go back next week for 2 more shots, and then the following one for the last. I just can't put 5 needles into him on one day... poor guy. He held himself pretty well, and bounced back quickly.

We then went back to daycare... where he spent the remainder of the day. After daycare, two of his teachers held an infant massage class. To get started, we lay B-Boy on his fuzzy blanket on the floor. One of my coworkers and her husband sat next to us with her son who is 3 weeks younger than B-Boy. B-Boy must have really liked them, because the next thing I knew, he rolled onto his side all by himself to get a better look!

WOW! He did this several times, and on both sides. It is only a matter of time before he is rolling all the way...

The massage class went well. B-Boy was very relaxed afterward... as a matter of fact, he could barely keep his eyes open during his last bottle. So, the busy day has settled into a quiet night, and we are oh so grateful.

So, I hope you enjoyed the update, and that the confusing title makes more sense now. He found his feet, got a massage, rolled on his side, and went to the doctor. Odd title, but my brain is tired... was up late watching the Saints beat the Colts to win their first Superbowl! Whoo-hoo... Who Dat!

Happy 3 month old!

One more day folks... that's how much time I have left on my leave. Where did the 12 weeks go? I was fortunate to have enough vacation to take all paid time off after my maternity leave ended. YAY! But now it is all but gone, and on Wednesday I head back to work. I will be going half days this week, and then on Monday the 11th, I am back full time.
I am just amazed that the time has flown by so quickly. And, that B-Boy is officially 3 months old today!

To celebrate, Neb took the day off and played with him for most of the day. He's so good with him, I just have to get some video of the two of them playing for you to see. Neb will feed him every morning, and then put him in his swing for a rowdy game of Smile. This is basically Neb making funny faces and noises and B-Boy smiling and turning his head - sometimes covering his eyes with his arm. It's really cute. Today, Neb was giggling during Smile, and B-Boy giggled back at him. Neb's reaction was priceless- he was so excited.

Then Neb will eventually put him in the activity gym where he plays with his legs... bicycle pumps, swimming strokes and ski motions are the norm... and then punching the stuffed monkey and bug that hang from the arches of the gym is usually repeated several times. Neb also rolls him to the left and then to the right. The funny thing about this is that Neb will jerk his own head in the direction he is going to roll B-Boy and say "are you ready to roll?" and then he rolls B-Boy in that direction while saying "Roll OVERRRRR" in a singsong voice. Why is that funny you ask? It's not. What is funny is that B-Boy has figured out what Neb's head jerk means, and will lower his shoulder so that he can easily roll that way.

How do we know this you ask? Simple. Neb did not tell me this trick. I tried the roll game and it did not go so well... B-Boy's head was flopping around and not rolling over as smoothly as he does for Neb. Silly Neb, not sharing his tricks! HA! But we figured it out and now I am rolling him just fine thank you!

But I get off track... where was I? Oh yes, B-Boy is 3 months today and will be going to daycare when I go back to work. We went to his classroom today to drop off some paperwork, diapers and clothes and for us all to see his teachers again. I got to ask more questions because face it, I was braindead at our last meeting... and have thought of lots more questions the closer to reality we get! It was nice to be back in his classroom and to see his teachers again.

Personally, I am looking forward to getting back to work and finding some balance. I feel really good about this for several reasons.
  1. His daycare is at my work. He will be 2 buildings away and I can get there very quickly if need be!
  2. As long as my schedule works out, I can go over to see him, feed him or snuggle him whenever I want.
  3. My friend Cat's two children have gone there and she raves about it. She even took me over to observe her son 's room when I was pregnant. So, it's not totally unknown.
  4. He will have 2 teachers and one aide. And, only 6 babies (including him) in the room. That's three adults to 6 kids!
  5. His primary teacher has been there at the daycare doing this for 20 years... Yes, you read that right, 20 years. Where else can you get that?
  6. I really love the work that I do, and truely believe it makes me a better person, which will make me a better and happier mom.
  7. I am sure Neb would like my side of our conversations to include topics other than B-Boy or schedules...
So, I plan on enjoying my last day home with B-Boy. I'll let you know how our first day goes... Think happy thoughts for us!

Pictures Anyone?

Yesterday, I took B-boy to get his 6 week photo taken. We had to fight off folks getting their Christmas pictures captured. B-boy did a great job, he fussed a lot, but we still got some good shots. Several friends recommended JC Penney for getting kids photos done, so I decided to give it a try. JC Penney is having a great sale right now, and we got 50% off the entire order! Sweet!

The photographer, Stephanie, was really patient with him and got some great shots. I kept it simple, and dressed him in a red onesie, and fought the urge to do a Xmas photo... This was about his being 6 weeks old, not Christmas after all! She was nice enough to let me capture her taking a photo of him....

I took several blankets for him to lie on, including a beautiful white afghan my mother made. All the ladies at the studio drooled over the afghan- and it was the perfect accessory for B-boy. After she took a bunch of photos in his onesie, we stripped him down to his diaper for some skin shots. He proceeded to get fussier and fussier, and even the bottle I brought failed to calm him. Poor Guy!

Stephanie wanted to get some shots of him on his tummy, holding himself up- which he still does not enjoy nor has he mastered completely- so that failed miserably. I had suggested we let me hold him vertically and take the photo over my shoulder. She laughed at first, but then decided to try it. She covered me completely with the afghan, and I held him while she clicked away. Those photos came out particularly great... guess B-boy just wanted his Mamma!

The photos will be ready next week, and I was able to purchase a CD with all of them on it... I will share them with you as soon as I have them! Oh- and Neb doesn't know about this as I wanted it to be a surprise... so mum's the word! :)

A New Milestone!

Yes, B-boy is now 6 weeks old, but that is not the milestone we are celebrating today!

Last night was the first night he slept in his crib!!!!

Up to now, he has slept mostly in his swing... sometimes in his bouncer seat... but he HATED his bassinet. We had originally thought he would sleep in his bassinet for 2 months in our room, but in reality, he slept in it MAYBE 4 times.

So last night we made the decision to try his room. Neb took the 9pm to midnight shift so that I could get some sleep, and B-boy slept in his swing in the living room. We traded out at midnight, and I pumped until 1am and then slept on the couch. Thank goodness it is comfy! At 2:30am, he woke up ready to eat... So at 3am, we put him in his crib, turned on his rainforest mobile, and quietly backed out of the room.

And he slept!!!! At 6am, we woke to his crying... right on schedule. We both got up- Neb changed him and I then fed him while Neb laid on the floor with Mango. Back to the crib he went... and we RAN to our bed hopeful he might sleep. After a bit of serious crying, Neb decided we should bring out our comfort Secret Weapon- the hair dryer. It did the trick, B-boy then slept until 9am!

It also gave us an excuse to use the cool video baby monitor that Neb purchased... He hung 2 of the cameras above B-boy's crib- we still don't know where the third one will go. The night vision on it was really cool! Here is a shot of B-boy this morning...

We have decided he was being nice to us in honor of GatorGirl's birthday... Happy Birthday GatorGirl!

Let's hope he is nice to us again tonight!
