B-Boy is still a champion eater. He moves up to eat in the "Toddler Food Program" next week, which means that the cafe at my work will be providing his meals during the day. He will then be eating the same foods that the other two older children are eating, which he seems to want. We will still provide his foods for snack, but this will make it much easier to get out the door everyday!
His culinary world is about to open up quite a bit, as they will be serving him a lot more than what he has had in the past. That's not to say he hasn't had his share of different foods.
As a matter of fact, I think his teachers think I am crazy. Last week I sent in two foods that they considered a bit "odd". B-Boy is nuts over hamburger, no suprise there. But they were shocked when I sent in sauted eggplant, cooked with onion, garlic powder, basil and black pepper. But he LOVES it...
Another thing he loves? Baked Teriyaki Tofu. My workBFF said her kids adored it, which is how I even came to know it existed. Good thing, because all I have to do to prepare it is remove it from the container and slice it into cubes. Easiest preperation EVER. And, he really really loves it.
How do I know? Because B-Boy makes this noise when he is eating happily. It's a MMMmmmm noise, but with a higher pitch in the middle. It makes me giggle when he makes it, and it also makes me to copy the noise back. The noise is that infective.
And then he wiggles back and forth in his chair before shoving a piece into his mouth. Unless it is hamburger, becuase that gets shoved in his mouth in fistfulls. He likes it that much.
We also introduced fish- he really liked the grouper chunks I sauted in vegetable broth, but it sure stank up his daycare and our house at the same time. His first meat was ham, and I think he liked the salty taste. It was funny to see him enjoying it... it was the first time I saw him shove food in his mouth over and over.
We are in the process of getting B-Boy to like Kiwi. It is hit and miss at the moment. One day he likes it, the next day, he spits it out immediately.
He is doing really well with his veggies, especially when I started cooking them in my homemade chicken stock. Carrots, peas, green beans and zucchini are transformed cooked that way. He scarfs up his veggies!
But his favorite food overall would have to be Gerber Puffs. They are star shaped, and come in lots of different flavors. B-Boy loves to make them CRUNCH in his mouth. His favorite flavors are the cherry and sweet potato. When he first started eating them, he would pick one up gingerly and place it in his mouth. Now, he picks up fistfulls and puts as many in his mouth as he can. Usually a giant smile follows as if he is saying "See, I really like these!".
I am proud that he is so adventurous with his eating... I hope it keeps up as he gets older. I can't wait to introduce crab, shrimp and crawfish! Yum.

A Champion Eater
When I was a kid, I REALLY wanted a trophy. This was back in the day when you didn't get a trophy for participation... you had to earn one. Frankly, I wasn't that accomplished at sports (mostly because I never focused on one...) even though my Dad really tried to get us there. My sister and I did Fun Runs every summer when we visited him, and even got our photo in the paper once for winning. Of course, they never mentioned we were the only two in the age group. Alas, I didn't get a trophy for that, just a ribbon.
One day, my Dad told us he had a surprise for us. Usually that meant we were going for a marathon tennis outing, or MAYBE to the boardwalk in Ocean City.... but this day, he presented both my sister and I with shiny trophies. There was a winged woman holding up a wreath, all in golden glory... or at least it was in my mind. The base of the trophy had our names on it, and underneath it said what we got the trophy for...
I know you are on the edge of your seat....
I was, and there are apparently only two of us who won this, the "Champion HubCap Washer".
Yep, I can scrub the grime with the best of em! You see, my Dad loves old cars... and he had a few. We would wash them for him when we visited (which reminds me to put that on my list of chores for B-Boy when he gets older. That is brilliant!).
Now, you might be wondering what that has to do with B-Boy today.
B-Boy is a champion eater. If there was a trophy, he would definately get it.
He is making his way really well through veggies and fruits. So far he has had:
We also had to switch him back to the soy formula. We had put him on the regular, and his face kept breaking into a horrid red scaley rash. We thought it might be the sheets at daycare, but even though I was waching them with a special detergent for him, the rash would still persist. He has been on soy for a week now, and the rash almost disappeared completely... until the papaya.
The good news is that Neb loves papaya... :)
Hmmm.... I wonder if I should make B-Boy a trophy?
Next up? Peaches.

- Green Beans
- Acorn Squash (still a big favorite)
- Peas
- Sweet Potatos
- Avocados
- Bannanas
- Apples
- Mangos
- Papaya
- Pears
- Zucchini
- Apricots
- Butternut Squash
- Cantalope (Which I find revolting, but my ENTIRE family and Neb just love it, so does B-Boy.)
- Spinach (I ate a TON of it with heavy garlic when pregnant with him, Neb finds it revolting! B-Boy thinks it tastes great.)
- Brocolli
- Organic O's Cereal, which is just like Cheerios

A Solid Update
B-Boy, like his Mom and Dad, is loving eating.
He is making his way really well through veggies and fruits. So far he has had:
This weekend we introduced B-Boy to Mangos, and he loved them. Although a big drawback is that it clears out his digestive system. And not in a good way. But, they are Neb's favorite, so he was quite excited to introduce them to B-Boy. We figured if he disliked them that Neb could add the puree to his margarita... it's a win-win! Too bad for Neb, B-Boy inhaled them.
Next up? Pears.
So far all the solids that B-Boy has had were homemade. I am really suprised at how easy it is to make baby food. Plus, he gets fresh food with no added sugar, salt or preservatives. It feels good to know I am able to provide for him. Not to knock store bought food. I am sure he will be eating it at some point. But this has been fun, so I plan on sticking with it while I can.

- Peas
- Sweet Potatos
- Avocados

Incidentally, B-Boy is doing great eating solids at the daycare, and we moved him into the highchair at home. He is doing really well eating there, and it is nice not having to bend over to feed him!

Ah, peas and sweet potatoes!
B-Boy started with Green Beans, and then moved on to Acorn Squash, which he adored. We then introduced him to peas, which to be honest, are not his favorite.
Last night, he moved on to sweet potatoes. We had wanted to start with them, but were told not to since they are so sweet. (Babies then only want to eat the sweet stuff, or so the theory goes.) I had thought it would be nice to start with something fitting from North Carolina for him to eat. Oh well. North Carolina is known for our sweet potatoes, so it seemed like a good place to start. Did you know this? North Carolina is the leader in sweet potato production, supplying 40% of the annual US production of sweetpotatoes.
See, you learned something. Neb and I went to the Farmer's Market to get them. Wanted them to be fresh for our little one! We decided on Covington sweet potatoes, as opposed to Beauregard, Hernandez, Jewel, Puerto Rico, Japanese, O'Henry and White Delight. Did you know there were so many kinds? I think not. I didn't know there were lots of different kinds of sweet potatoes either.
I baked them for an hour on a pan at 400 degrees. I pulled off the peel and then pureed it to a fluffy goodness.
So, how did B-Boy do?
He adored them... and looked at Neb as if to say, "You have been holding out on me! Where have these been?"
But the funniest part was to come... an hour afterward we put him to bed... WHERE THE SUGAR KICKED IN!!!!!
Seriously, he was flopping around, shaking his head, willing himself awake. His eyes would flutter, clearly showing he was sleepy, and then it was as if he said "SUGAR!!!! SHUG- SHUG- SHUG.... SUGAR!!!!!!" and then he would shake his head, flop his arms, and kick his legs.
It was hilarious, and it took 4 cycles of the music on the seahorse and me rubbing his belly in a circular motion for him to finally calm down and go to sleep.
So we learned something.
a) don't feed B-Boy so close to bed
b) heaven help us when we give him real sugar
c) we are grateful he can't run yet.
;)
These are called Peas? But isn't that also....?
Yes, B-Boy. English is a funny language.

Orange is a great color on me! HA!

Squash, a new favorite!
This week, B-Boy got to have his first solids, green beans. I wrote about this earlier, if you will recall.
He ate that for 3 days with no major issues, so it was time to move onto another food. After much debate, Neb and I decided to have him try acorn squash next.
We bought 2 squash and sliced them in half. I placed them in a baking dish face down in about an inch of water. They cooked at 400 degrees for 45 minutes. I then peeled them and pureed them in the food processor. It was pretty easy, even though it took awhile.
B-Boy absolutely LOVES it. I think it is a new favorite, and it will probably be very hard to top! He has had it 4 times this week, and became a very happy baby each time he ate them. I even mixed some into his oatmeal yesterday, go figure, he loved it.
So mental note to self, this might be a good go-to food if he starts disliking foods down the road!

Solid! I give it a B.
So today B-Boy got another first... he had his first foray into solid foods!
Today was beautiful, and B-Boy got a warm walk with Neb followed by all three of us sitting on the screened-in porch. It was fun to watch the golfers and feel a little like our old selves... it made Neb want to be on the course again, and frankly, me too. It was just that nice out.
Afterward, we sat B-Boy's bouncer seat on the kitchen table to feed him. Neb started with his bottle, and then when we were SURE he was happy, I started introducing the spoon. Neb took camera duty and got some great photos.
What did he have? Nothing very exciting, actually. We fed him rice cereal mixed with some formula, heated to take the chill off. It was the consistency of runny elmer's glue, and now that I think of it, looked exactly like that!
We kept waiting for:
a) a meltdown into fussiness
b) a sneeze, thereby covering us in pastey goo
c) spit up
I can happily report we got none of that. B-Boy was in good spirits, and ate about 10 spoonfuls of the stuff. (Incidentally, I fed him out of a bowl I used to eat oatmeal out of when I was a little girl. They were bowls from my grandmother's house, and I adored them. They aren't much too look at, but I have such happy and warm memories associated with them... they make me smile and think of my Mema everytime I use them. If you look closely in the second picture, you will see the bowl.)
Neb and I remained clean, and B-Boy did really well with the spoon. We even got a smile!
Also, I think it is official... B-Boy is teething. No teeth have shown up yet, but all the telltale signs are there. He is drooling like a Saint Bernard, and will stick just about anything in his mouth. B-Boy hates the teething rings that we have for him, and prefers more exotic items for teething on... The first was a rubber giraffe named "Sophie" that Neb swears is a dog toy (You can see it behind him in the pictures above). Yep, it is squishie and makes a high pitched squeak like dog toys. I can assure you it is not a dog toy, it is ranked number one on amazon.com for baby toys. Okay, I admit, I never did check the ranking of this toy on the dog list... Which makes me wonder, what will be the state of amazon.com when B-Boy is old enough to read this? Will be interesting to see that!
The daycare found that he likes to gum on foam letters. How they figured that out is beyond me. I went to feed him one day, and he was grasping onto something green. He kept putting it in and out of his mouth, and I was amazed that he was holding on to it for so long... as he has a habit of tossing things aside at the moment. I had to ask what it was, and his teacher told me it was the letter Q! I kid you not. B-Boy was gumming Q. It was from a set of bath toys, foam letters to play with in the bath!
So I had to go out and purchase some of those nifty foam letters, which I found on my second trip to Target. Later, he can use them in the tub, as they will stick to the wall. But in the meantime, I gave B-Boy one to gum on... since he is having fun with his Bbbbbbbbb sounds, he gummed the letter B today. Yep, today was sponsored by the letter B.

What's that Mom?
This is NOT a nipple...
This feels weird...and my hand looks all blurry!
Hee Hee, this feels funny!
What-cha talkin' 'bout Mom?
Okay, I'm done. What's next?
